ON SUNDAY NIGHT, former Black Eyed Peas star Fergie faced the task of performing US national anthem The Star Spangled Banner on live TV during the NBA All-Star game.

To say she got a little experimental would be an understatement. The audience were not prepared for Fergie’s  rendition of The Star Spangled Banner. Even Khloe Kardashian, a close friend of Fergie, was tweeting about her confusion.

Many of the basketball players had to lower their heads to hide the fact that they were laughing. Jimmy Kimmel and Chance The Rapper could be seen laughing in disbelief in the audience.

Even Roseanne Barr, who famously screeched the national anthem in 1990, commented on Fergie’s performance.

Plenty of jokes were made.

So Fergie decided to break her silence about the whole thing.

A brave move, considering the fact that celebs usually step back and let things like this blow over. The 42-year-old singer released a statement addressing the criticism she has received:

I’ve always been honoured and proud to perform the national anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA. I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone.

She then added:

I love this country and honestly I tried my best.

Fans stepped in to defend Fergie after she felt the need to apologise for her performance.

Here is the full version of the song, if you’d like to hear it.
